The reporting of this is either extremely supervificial or the research demonstrates a total lack of understanding of ensuring the equivalence of the comparators when presenting the findings.

For example: BAME male, Eton, Balliol and a Blue vs BAME Comp, former Poly and Sunday morning football: viz it is likely to be the social class (I paraphrase) rather than the ethnicity that results in candidate 1 getting a pupilage while candidate 2 does not.

There is also a likely dis preponderance of BAME candidates going to less prestigious universities and I expect that this too will have a material effect on the outcome.

As for grades, with grade inflation everyone gets a 2:1 and a VC at their bar course these days and this is no longer an indicator of significant intellectual or legal ability.

I'm not saying there is a proper equality of access and no entrenched privilege (I would suggest that inequality and the OBN (no that's the other TLA but sometimes equally relevant) is almost universally accepted) but research such as this tends to show little other than most lawyers don't understand stats / will mindlessly follow the 'inequality' bandwagon.

Now let me harvest the collective disapproval.
