I am Welsh and I speak the Welsh language. I am not at all surprised by the comments below. It is the usual round of "hardly anyone speaks this language" "there are better ways to use resources".

Welsh is just as much an official language as English, certainly within Wales, and I think that is the main point here. It is not about how many people will make use of this service and how many people actually speak Welsh, it is about showing respect for the language of one of the two countries within the legal jurisdiction of England and Wales. The Welsh people have had to fight hard for years for the right to have their language and culture respected and protected, and this is not a short-term policy. We might be experiencing a tough economic climate at the moment, but it will eventually pass. Sadly, I suspect there would always be criticism of this policy, even in better economic times.
