If it were no longer compulsory in English-medium schools, and if it were not required to work for local authorities in areas where it is not much spoken, how long would the Welsh language last? As another poster said, it is on expensive and wasteful life support, and it makes children waste time on it which would better be spent on a major world language or on a science.

The fact that in earlier generations it was suppressed is neither here nor there and is certainly not a reason for inflicting it on people now who do not want it and are not interested in them or their children learning it.

Take warning from Ireland where all the compulsion in the world has not stopped the number of people who speak Irish by choice in social life from declining and declining and declining.
