Like the other posters below, I'm amazed this question has even been asked. What business is it of an employer if someone wishes to be a school governor? I never asked my employers for any kind of permission when I served as a governor for 8 years.

Firms should be pleased to encourage their people to serve their communities.

Maybe this piece is reflective of life working in City firms - if so, I don't envy those who feel they even need to ask the question. LawNet firms are firmly rooted in their communities and want their people - not just their lawyers - to be as active as they wish to be in local service, whether it's serving as a school governor, being a special constable or part-time fire or lifeboat crew.
