The National Minimum Wage for over 25's in 2017 was £7.50. Multiply this by 49 hours per week and 52 weeks a year and we arrive at figure of £19,110. Some trainees are getting paid less than the minimum wage. These firms should be investigated by the SRA. The fact that this won't happen speaks volumes about the regulator and the profession.

Furthermore, low pay doesn't encourage social mobility, quite the opposite. Those that can afford to live on the low wages will prosper, not those that are the smartest, hardest working or most talented.

The regulator has an obligation under the LSA to

'encourage an independent, strong, diverse and effective legal profession'

The fault lies at the door of the SRA who will do nothing, not even acknowledge that a problem exists.
