London Lawyer, I (anonymous 14:35)was a mature student and worked three 12 hour night shifts a week, holidays etc to pay my way through university and law school and the usual bills etc we all have to pay. Still ended up owing over £20k in student loans. I'm not as old as my original comments may suggest ...

There is a lot of competition and whilst we have a great team at my firm now I have been surprised at how flaky some of our trainees have been in the past. No nouse, questionable work ethic and barely able to spell their own names without using spellcheck.

Where there are relatively few vacancies and lots of competition people need to make themselves stand out from the crowd.

Having been treated badly as a trainee I very strongly believe they should be looked after and treated decently but at the same time they are entering a tough profession and like any other sector the businesses need to make money so they need to man up and impress.
