If you take away probate from many a High Street firm of solicitors, it is not obvious to me what work is left that is really profitable. Immigration? Police Station Duty Solicitor? Welfare Benefits Advice? The few times I end up doing residential conveyancing (for friends & family, including for myself, not commercially) I can't remember the last time I had a real solicitor on the other side. Civil litigation in all its forms from personal injury to boundary dispute through to divorce for Mr & Mrs Average is a fool's errand with the likelihood of either a consumer complaint particularly over costs or a professional negligence action due to under-settling being absolutely sky high. It wasn't for nothing that all the big City firms got rid of their private client departments many years ago.
