Marco Polo recorded in his diaries that he passed through rich countries and through poor countries on his journey to China noting that in rich countries, people’s behaviour tended to be bad. The infamous Mongol Emperor, Tamerlane, stated that, “Lose control of your women and your society will crumble!” Thomas Hardy was adamant that even as a woman walked down the aisle on her wedding day, she had half-an-eye on her next potential suitor. So what do they say about people who don’t learn from history?

The simple answer is that no form of sexual harassment is acceptable. However, given recent events across The Atlantic, it now seems fashionable for women to make claims of sexual harassment against either rich men or men whom they don’t like. But surely women, particularly young women, should look at their own behaviour first? Witness Geordie Shore!

As someone who has been in the legal profession for many years, I have never failed to be appalled by the behaviour of quite a lot of young women – rude, arrogant, lazy, selfish and enjoying getting people into trouble and rarely being punished except where there were financial consequences! They never seemed particularly shy around men and certainly not around unknown men on work nights out. It is equally surprising that a lot of young ‘professional’ women are now posting inappropriate pictures of themselves on social media.

But let’s leave the last word to Baron Macaulay – “We know no spectacle so ridiculous as the British public in one of its periodical fits of morality.” In today’s age of equality, that applies just as much to women!
