It is the role of the Chief Coroner to set national standards for all coroners. The discussion suggests this is an area where a standard needs to be set, after appropriate consultation, so that the needs and desires of the families of deceased persons who come within the coroners' jurisdictions are taken into account and appropriate balances are struck, without adversely affecting the primary duties that coroners have to fulfil.
