I thought this item might generate a few reader's comments. The idea that the SRA could be handed the power to levy fines of up to £50m should be of great concern to all members of the profession. As Frank says it is a back door way to implementing a disciplinary sanctions regime based on the civil burden of proof. That is not right. Ask Leigh Day.
This should be seen for what it is; empire building and a case of judge and jury. The idea that it will save time is interesting, although hard to see how that will be achieved without a huge increase in SRA staffing levels.
