Whilst the Law Society's current link to the SRA limits its "trade union" role, it does at least allow the profession some say on what rules and standards solicitors should work to. In other words who guards the guards should the SRA become wholly independent, and whose tune will the SRA dance to?

Surely the hallmark of a profession is that professionals discuss and agree amongst themselves what standards they should work to and how, and the regulator then assesses whether or not individual members meet those standards?

Or perhaps everything is now a business and no one cares about the niceties of self-governance.
