GovUK Verify lies behind many Government online portals.

But surely ID cards (maybe with embedded DNA) would help in many cases - it's a nonsense to resist these on "invasion of privacy" grounds, given that so many people and organisations these days have access to so much of our personal data (and we don't have any real idea what they do with it). Some years ago I heard of one Land Registry application for a replacement certificate (in the days of paper title certificates) that failed because the ID number on the applicant's papers supplied with the application did not match the ID number on the papers lodged when the South African national who was the proprietor was originally registered.
