The question of why a high-functioning person loses grip on reality (so spectacularly) is the issue. This was effectively a deliberate professional suicide.

The affective language of Ed Austin's post perhaps misses the point. We could use similar language about the assistant pilot of a German Wings plane who did a mass-murder/suicide when crashing into the Alps - but it doesn't really get anywhere.

A better thing to do is find out how this kind of aberrant behaviour can be spotted early, so similar mass crimes are prevented in future. Given the enormous damage such incidents can cause, preventive mental health training is needed for all persons in positions of responsibility (professionals) as part of general and professional education.
