Speaking as a retired solicitor, both branches of the profession must carry some responsibility for the present appalling mess. The profession should have been more militant instead of being 'nice chaps'. Being nice chaps has simply allowed government to push them deeper and deeper into the mire not just in financial terms but also in terms of the regulatory burden to which the profession has become subject.
I praise God every day that I am out of it.
