Yes, Chris, we all (but the psychopaths) know; it's a social construct. That doesn't mean we sit down together and work it out. And the psychologists and neuro-scientists will soon find where/what the 'deep level' is, just as they have shown that there is no such objective thing as a range of colours. The spectrum is a construct of the brain, varying slightly amongst human populations (see G Deutscher: Why the world looks different in other languages).
