Anon 14:39, I don't quite understand what point you're trying to make.

You aren't happy with the level of fixed costs, which is entirely out of the hands of solicitors, because the work required to earn the costs is minimal. You aren't happy that the people doing the work might have limited legal knowledge, when in fact they seem to be the most appropriate people to do the menial 'button-pushing' you describe.

So what do you suggest? Do we increase the complexity of the work required to earn the costs? Therefore the level of legal knowledge and ability required must rise too. Okay, this means we need people who in turn will expect greater recompense for doing that job. See anon 14:54's comment.
