I've clearly misunderstood the whole system - I had no idea that clients could choose not to pay if they were struggling, or that law firms could choose how much to pay their staff depending on their cashflow. I've been running my firm along very different lines; we have fixed outgoings and therefore must ensure that we make enough money to cover them. I'll remember in future to just write off bills when clients say they can't pay them. I'm sure the staff won't mind being paid less once I explain the system to them.
