This bill would be a very good opportunity to raise the judicial retirement age. It was set at 70 years ago, when some judges were becoming an embarrassment by insisting on hanging onto office, even into their 80s and after they had begun to lose their faculties. However, since then, most other retirement ages have been raised. Keeping the age at 70 is ageist and discriminatory against career judges. Many very experienced and highly competent judges are being forced out at a time when the Department of Justice is struggling to find suitable new candidates.
