I have just been watching the BBC News on a TV in a waiting room with no sound, but the subtitles (presumably produced by voice recognition software). Interested to find that, here in Scotland, the Creams are a party at Holyrood, and that Brexit involves us leaving the Giu. And this is English to English...... I recently reviewed a contract translated by software from Brazilian Portuguese to English. For 2 of the clauses, my review was "I have no idea what issue they are trying to address here, much less what it says". As for Star Trek, I remember in the prequel "Enterprise" an early translator translating the alien for "human" as "bags of mostly water". Seems appropriate to this debate.
