"as part of its 'Out of Office' email reply said that all emails sent while someone was off would be deleted without being read and the sender was specifically requested to resend if it was important when the respondent returned to work."

Nobody has ever taken that line with a paper letter. Just as an email has no reason to jump the queue on paper letters, likewise, there's no reason why an email can't wait just like a paper letter. That automatic response is both rude and arrogant.

Besides, this isn't a new thing. I can remember many years ago, a pushy London firm on the opposite side in some litigation which always waited until the last minute and then sent it's next stage so as to arrive as late as possible on a Friday afternoon when they knew we were unlikely to be able to get hold of any instructions until the Monday. It may have been that the person there was always running to keep up, and trying to catch up with themselves, but it was so consistent that I'm convinced it was deliberate.
