Precisely, but you shouldnt be so limited in your condemnation. HM Treasury dont give a damn. The Secretary of State for Justice and all the Ministers in the MOJ as well as most MPs dont give a damn. Most solicitors and barristers who dont undertake legal aid work dont give a damn. Most journalists and news media too. I also include Judges and Magistrates in the "who cares?" brigade.
The Law Society, the Criminal Bar Association and the other so-called representative bodies have always failed to properly challengee the Government on legal aid spending (although they do take legal action to stop proposals) so that the issue of the Scope of legal aid the the remuneration rates are actually adressed.
I suggest that the Law Society stops reviewing proposed legislation through its Committees and stops responding to consultations. It should demand a Royal Commission whose proposals will be binding on all parties to look at the Scope of legal aid and the remuneration rates and until that is established there should be no assistance given to the Government as far as the drafting of legislation is concerned or in relation to any Government or MoJ or LAA Consultation.
However, lets be realistic-a Government that is encouraging the stockpiling of tinned produce because of the fear of a no-deal Brexit is unlikley to do anything at all about legal aid for 50 years-or even longer.
