This wasn't a smash and grab fraud. It was a dodgy deal that might have gone right and been unnoticed in this naughty world. That's what, I suspect those involved hoped for.

It didn't and this case is the fall out. If every commercial deal was held up to your scrutiny, the doctrine of utmost good faith would be applied to buying a bottle of milk.
