Rayner, it's apples and pears to compare a solicitor's hourly rate with that of a GP. GPs also receive capitation fees from the NHS in addition to treatment specific payments from the NHS: hence the current debate over the 'poaching' of basically healthy patients (and their capitation fees) from some GP practices to others, whose financial model seems to be based very heavily on capitation fees rather than treatment payments. Solicitors only receive what they can charge to the client (albeit that in some cases these charges may be paid by the state through what is left of legal aid).
