Why exactly are referral fees a problem? The solicitors pay it, not defendants. The clients (setting aside arguments over success fees etc) don't pay it. So why the problem.

Personally I don't like them because the implication is that clients are a commodity to be bought and sold which I find nauseating, and that each case has to be automated as far as possible to turn a profit. Also it increases the probability for a quick buck so will promote fraudulent activity .But for defendants, generally, they aren't a problem.

Having looked at the article though, it does make me giggle when I see 'where the claimant lives in (say) Northumberland and their solicitors are based in (say) Southampton or Bristol. ' Why (say) that - why not tell it as it is as I look at defendant firms in Cardiff, Birmingham and Manchester who are both 150+ miles away from my client and me.
