I'm all in favour of clear and transparent pricing where it can be meaningfully and accurately provided. However, we are not selling burgers, chips and hot and cold drinks in strictly managed quantities. On many matters we deal with a range of variables including the quality of instructions received, how the other side deals with a matter and a range of unexpected issues. Many clients understand this, particularly when it is explained to them in an open and upfront manner.

Some clients just want the cheapest burger they can buy and will shop around every time they feel peckish. There will always be an outlet that will offer a cut price burger - but what is actually in it and do you really want to eat it?

John Harvey, I wonder if the 1970 survey you worked on was in any way connected with the abolition of scale fees for conveyancing? As I understand it, when scale fees existed, which of course provided not only transparent but also fixed, sliding scale fees, the only thing firms could compete on was quality of service. Perhaps the SRA should be calling for the reinstatement of scale fees and rolling them out for a range of practice areas? This would provide a great deal of certainty both for firms and their clients.
