I'll just add, that having read the SRA templates, they very worringly:-

a) refer to the word "quote", meaning that when the "customer" moans off to the Legal Ombudsman, they can legitimately point to the website and say it was a quote and not an estimate and therefore can not be varied;

b) go into a ridiculous amount of complexity that would in many cases render the exercise pointless, since surely the whole point is to enable a "customer" to see at a glance what is charged and make a meaningful comparison, not read thirteen pages of caveats and explanation that will vary from one firm to another making comparison impossible; and

c) contain misleading statements as to the law in any event! See the reference to recovering costs in the business debt collection section which contains incorrect statements about VAT being recoverable and also implies that costs in small claims are (apart from VAT) recoverable when of course they are not unless the court orders.
