Anon 09.29, you say:

“Rubbish. It costs no more to grant probate to a rich estate than it does to a poor one and - subject if you like to a zero rate for the very smallest estates - there shoud be a flat fee to cover that cost and no more.”

Exactly! And it should cost no more for a solicitor to act as an executor for somebody who dies and leaves a straightforward estate of, say £1million, than it does for somebody who leaves a similarly, simple estate of only say £100,000. But no, based on fees which can vary from 2 - 5%, the first estate would incur fees of £20,ooo - £50,000, whilst the second one would be charged £2,000 - £5,000.
Madness, and an absolute rip off!
