Me (18.54) again with a second thought. To the layman, what concepts do you think are embodied in the name "solicitor"? I suspect that the layman will say "it's someone who knows the law". They will not say "it's someone who's subject to specific rules about client checks, money laundering, ethical conduct, and who is subject to an ombudsman".

In this day and age, I am sadly unsure they would even say "it's someone in whom I can place implicit trust" so much as "it's some leathery, greedy old lizard in a tie who's probably a bit grabby with waitresses".

I just don't think the "brand" extends any further than "expert in the law" and I don't agree with commentators that it will be weakened as a result of these reforms.
