I suspect I’m one of that shrinking minority? Are we? Who are willing, for whatever reason (in my case a period of unemployment which was bitterly traumatic) to put in their contracted hours plus on the employer’s premises.
Let us be honest, these people are very necessary for without them flexi-hours and family friendly cannot happen.
Why not recognise and salute this traditionally minded band and allow businesses, all businesses, to designate certain roles as business critical; such posts would attract a substantial salary premium but their holder would have to work their contracted hours on the premises, would not be entitled to request flexible working, could not take reproductive leave and would be subjected to medical incapacity procedures, if applicable, far sooner. You would probably find that the takers would be a) men preferring to embrace the traditional role of provider for their families and b) older, single women with a pension shortfall.
In the rush to embrace this brave new world, spare a thought for those willing and able to form the client’s safety net.
