I'm not a tax expert, Patrick, but wouldn't you look at each job individually. Presumably a person can be an employee and self-employed at the same time if they have more than one job, but in most cases the true position for each job in isolation shouldn't be too difficult to ascertain. It just seems that with what they call the gig economy a lot of relatively new companies with a strong online element are abusing their employees by positing bogus self-employment arrangements. Of course some people might prefer to be self-employed. You might lose sick pay and holiday entitlement but you gain set-offs against income. But you can't just choose- well you can but if the Revenue disagree they'll tell you!
