I think much of this is down to the level of expectation/aspiration of the kids themselves.

Of the kids of friends who left primary school at the same time as mine, about 75% went to local comps and the rest to selective schools. 5 years on they all still hang out together occasionally but there is a clear delineation. The kids who went to the selective schools all seem to expect a good/high earning career and have in mind what they have to do to get there but the rest just don't seem to be aiming anywhere near as high or to aspire as much as the selective kids do.
