What we should have is some kind of system where solicitors have to undertake a minimum number of hours of continuing education in each year and be able to prove their attendance on courses, reading of relevant articles etc as a precondition of renewing their practising certificates.

Of course, there will need to be some sort of exemption for those who aren't up to the job generally but need to be allowed in to provide a cut-price alternative and generally lower the standard even further. They could perhaps just be required to sit and think about whether they are good?
