“If the party at the time does not enact laws to protect what the people see as necessary (such as clean beaches and lower pollution etc.) they will soon find themselves replaced (after 4 years) by the voting public”

I agree with your statement in principle, but couldn’t one argue that any political party woefully handling Brexit negotiations would have also found themselves replaced?

Plus, this is Britain; Govt could introduce laws or set targets, fine, but this is British politicians – when they fail to meet their own targets, what do you expect to happen? I would venture nothing would happen, with the possible exception of repeatedly extending the timeframe to achieve the target. Our politicians are specialists at tokenism, to make it appear they’re acting in our interests.

Britain has severely lacked good politicians and government for a decades now, and they can get away with so much already because of complacency amongst the people (such as reforms to A2J, legal aid etc – why aren’t people up in arms?). Do you genuinely believe our welfare will be better served with a solely UK government, and nothing else to hold them to account?
