There is a material change though, between the position that we were faced with in 2016, and the disaster that is unfolding now. I would argue that before we leave (a step which the government acknowledges will harm the economy in the short and medium terms at least), we should be asked if we are sure that this is what we want to do.

That is not an affront to democracy; that is democracy.

The idea that we should leave first and then wait before asking thew question again doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. By then even more damage will have been done.
