@13:59 as terrible as it is to say, i think you could be right. i worked briefly in criminal practice from 2005-2008 and people were saying it was untenable as a career (both as a solicitor and as counsel) and, as far as I can see, things have become significantly worse subsequent to that.

I will say this much: at the firm I started out in (which was pretty much exclusively a criminal firm) pretty much all my peers who started around the same time are now working in other areas of law.... The only people who seem to have stuck around are people who were a number of years into their careers even then and appear to have felt they didn't have transferable skills to move on.

Very sad.
