What those juniors should tell their unhelpful bosses is that it will not do the firm any good if negligence occurs as a result of the junior not knowing what to do. If they find that this attitude gets them sidelined then they should be grateful that they have found out early in their careers just what "cults" they are working for and move to somewhere better. Having said that, I remember a junior partner in a City firm making an enormous cock-up on advising a massive client and he became very successful in that firm. You just have to know how to "play the game"; if you don't know how to play the game or don't like playing it then get out and save your soul.
