Hell I'm 20 years qualified and I still don't know everything.

There is simple advice that should be given very early on (though as a litigator this might not apply to all):

1. Read the rules.
2. Understand the rules and what they mean.
3. Understand how the rules interact.
4. Understand case law relevant to the point and how it relates and why.
5. Be objective when considering anything at all, and don't believe anything unless there is evidence to back it up.
6. Above all else, keep re-learning basic principles of law.

The rest flows from that. The number of solicitors I come across who don't understand causation...

For the rest I understand the need for a mentor system but that depends on firms willing to take time, rather than treat junior solicitors as fee producers immediately.

I'd hazard a guess that even with ability, decent training and a decent supervising partner it still takes at least 3 years PQE to "get" it. Beyond that it is all about experience.

IMHO
