I am somewhat puzzled here, and as I last practised criminal law 15 years ago, please forgive my ignorance. The point I can't quite understand how there is legal aid for an absent applicant. My understanding is the defendant doesn't get unlimited legal aid, and the steps are limited. It used to be that if you wanted to appeal, you had to submit a fresh application. Is there now some sort of "through order" that covers appeals without any further paperwork?
