Many people cannot qualify as Solicitors for personal reasons such as cost. I taught the ILEX courses way back in the early 1990's when I was a senior Law Lecturer. As I remember it, the course was a tough one as it covered both academic law and legal practice. The students were all working in Solicitors' offices and my recollection was that as well as passing all the exams, they had to have seven years practical experience in a Solicitor's office before being able to attain Fellowship and call themselves Legal Executives. Let's drop another spanner in the works; anyone remember Managing Clerks and qualifying as a 'ten year man''? (No women managing clerks around in those days and very few female solicitors either).
