It would be interesting to know how much he received in fees from them. I bet it was substantially more than £85k, which means that on a strictly commercial basis money-laundering is a viable and profitable area of practice. After all, for every one that's caught they are probably hundreds who aren't.

I've often wondered how third world dictators and East European oligarchs manage to pass the money laundering tests when buying £50m properties in Knightsbridge and Belgravia. This case provides the answer - the solicitors involved evidently charge enough so that the odd fine (and no other disciplinary sanction) is just part of the overhead.

It stinks - a modest (in the context of the money involved) fine for the City slicker and a striking off for the poor SP out in the sticks.
