The English Judicial System is currently set up in a way that requires input and cooperation from lawyers acting on behalf of the parties. In comparison many European jurisdictions are much more oriented to Judicial management of cases. Traditionally this meant that spending on legal aid in England appeared disproportionately high compared to other jurisdictions.
Removing lawyers from the system may be desirable, but without massive investment to improve the rest of the system the whole thing will collapse.
