This is yet another tax increase, and a big one. If it were possible to deduct the probate fee from the IHT payable on the estate then overall the payment to the Exchequer would remain neutral. You can debate the fairness of any inheritance tax, or any other tax come to think of it, but a fee of up to £6,000 is exorbitant and oppressive.
