Logically what's good and fair for the taxpayer - wearing my Taxpayers' Alliance hat - is a criminal justice system that doesn't cost anything at all. However I'm one of those old-school types who thinks there 's a bit more to a decent society than minimising the amount of tax I pay. Historically the justification for tolerating government (whether that's a tribal chief, a monarch, or a republic) was that it protected me from enemies, kept order, and resolved disputes in an impartial way (a.k.a. providing justice). That's the minimum. Everything else - however sensible and desirable - is frankly a bit of a bonus.
