By definition, if the home office has accepted eligibility under the scheme, then the individual had a legal right to stay in this country that the home office was wrongly trying to take away.

This was/is people's lives. People who have been resident in this country for decades. People whose entire lives are in this country, but who were being threatened with our actually deported.

Who can honestly say they would not have wanted a lawyer to help them in that situation? I am damn sure that every politician, every Sir Humphrey, and yes, Martin Forde QC as well - they would all have wanted independent legal advice on something affecting their entire lives. And they would all have spent a damn sight more than £500 on that advice.

To butcher the phrase slightly: lawyer for me, but not for thee
