'Surely no one can really believe that freelance solicitors will comprise the cream of the legal profession. Rather it must more probable that the ranks of freelance solicitors will attract lawyers who for one reason or another most clients would be well advised to avoid.'

Actually having worked for two national practices for over 20 years and being a an equity partner in corporate and resigning and running a company offering unreserved legal services for almost 10 years without any issues or claims dealing with the same work as undertaken whilst in the national practices your remarks are offensive unjustified and slam of a desperation akin to those wanting to retain the status quo of a profession long outdated by the evolving needs of individuals and businesses in a fast moving environment where there are many unregulated businesses encroaching on what was the former sole domain of solicitors.

The new rules will simply allow us to also undertake reserved services. Either way we have always been bound by the Solicitors Code of Conduct distinguishing ourselves from those that offer unregulated services with no qualifications.

The most incompetent lawyers we have seen are mostly the ones in the large firms hiding behind the good reputations of their firms but lacking basic skills and ability and with limited commercial nous. Hardly the cream of any crop. ( apologies to all those who aren’t in this category and therefore will not be offended ) Anyone with a client following; commercial nous and excellent ability should see the changes as an opportunity and I can assure you we earn more than we ever did whilst in private practice although that has never been a driver.

Wonder where you have got in your career ??
