I think that many on this thread have missed the point. One of the regulatory objectives in section 1(1) Legal Services Act 2007 is 'encouraging an independent, strong, diverse and effective legal profession'. It must be self-evident that the profession will be at its strongest and of greatest benefit to society if its make-up reflects the communities it serves. How else is the SRA supposed to monitor this if it doesn't ask, using language which those communities will recognise? You don't have to like it, you just have to do it. Problem solved.
