SRA probably recognise that sex and gender are very different.

Leaving aside a tiny proportion of borderline cases, sex is given by genes and is fixed for life.

Gender on the other hand is chosen or assumed; it is not necessarily about how are equipped when we are born. It is about how a person wants to be or how they identify.

People can transition their gender. They cannot transition their sex. Gender can be fluid. Sex cannot be.

Any population census, aimed at informing health care spending, needs the data for both those

The SRA probably has reasons for wanting only gender information.
