My premiums could be reduced on renewal, but only if: I spent some time researching alternative quotes (and mentioning better 'offers' to my existing insurer, who usually responded with a matching discount); and if I added another adult to the policy. I chose a sister who lives 100 miles away, and never drove my car, but having a second name always reduced premiums considerably. Bizarre. But standard premiums on renewal were otherwise always 10-20% higher.
