The Law Society has renewed its call for statutory protection for legal professional privilege.
In a response to a government consultation on codes of practice covering interception under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act, it says potential surveillance of lawyer-client communications ‘can have an extraordinarily chilling effect’, corroding the entire legal process. Currently, legal professional privilege receives no statutory protection under the act.
Current definition involves a 'notoriously difficult, time-intensive, expensive and uncertain process', lawyers and journalists state.
Consultation opens on reforming the law of apologies in civil proceedings.
Measure will outlaw biometric categorisation systems based on sensitive characteristics and untargeted scraping of facial images from CCTV footage.
