Legal aid lawyers have a belligerent ally in the Guardian’s star columnist Zoe Williams, who directed a withering broadside at the government’s PCT plans last Saturday. Still, quite a few solicitors will have choked on their morning croissant at her revelation that Tesco plans to bid for a contract. Maybe they’ll do three contracts for the price of two.

No so, in fact. ‘Tesco law’ is handy shorthand for the liberalisation of legal services, but the supermarket must be bemused that it continues to be linked to a market in which it has expressed no interest. Besides, with profits tumbling – and the Fresh & Easy debacle rumbling – Tesco ought to be focusing its full attention on the core business.
